4. A-10 Thunderbolt II

The Fairchild Republic A-10 Thunderbolt II is a single-seat is a twin seat, twin turbofan close air support(CAS) aircraft. Commonly referred as A-10 OR Warthog OR Hog, is the only aircraft which was solely designed for CAS. A-10 entered into in 1976 & is still serving USAF ! As it is CAS aircraft, it had to be made more durable, more resistant to damage. For this, the company built the airframe measuring 1200 kg of titanium armour enabling it to withstand huge amount of damage & continue flying.
The A-10’s weapon is what it makes so deadly ! The Warthog has got a 30 mm GAU-8 Avenger rotary cannon coming out of its nose. Now this lethal weapon weighing almost 2 tons & 1.3 m long has a firing a rate of 4200 RPM ? ! Well, it might sound like Drrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr…. damn, I can’t even imagine that rate !

2. B-2 Spirit

“hol..y plane!” – my reaction when I saw it for the first time ! I was like- whattt.. is it a flat plate? So, B-2 Spirit aka. Stealth bomber is an American strategic bomber featuring stealth technology(almost undetectable by radar) made by Northrop Grumman(Northrop Corporation).
The aircraft is not detectable by radar, except when the bomb bay opens to drop thermal & nuclear bombs.
In 2008, an aircraft was crashed just after taking off, which leaves the other 20 in service & USAF plans to operate all B-2’s until 2058.
The total program cost including development, engineering and testing, averaged $2.1 billion per aircraft in 1997 😮

1. SR-71 Blackbird

& here SHE comes… The Black Lady ! This one is just magical !
The Lockheed SR-71 “Blackbird” was a strategic long range reconnaissance aircraft that was operated by the United States Air Force.
A total of 32 aircraft were built; 12 were lost in accidents and none lost to enemy action. The SR-71 has several nick names including Blackbird, Habu & The Black lady.
The Blackbird was powered by 2 Pratt & Whitney J58 turbo-ramjet engines; the engine itself is a combination of 2 engines – turbojet & ramjet. The turbojet was used during low speeds & ramjet was efficient & had to be used for achieving higher speeds ! Even to start the engines of the aircraft, you needed two V8 internal combustion engines bringing the RPM to 3200 so that the turbojet could self sustain !
This masterpiece still holds 2 world records (manned, turbojet powered & sustained flight)-

  • Air-speed record – 3529.6 km/hr !!! (now that’s around 1 km/sec)
  • Altitude record – 85,000 feet !!! (at this height, you start to see the space)

The camera on SR-71 was so advanced & so ahead of its time that when it took a picture of a car 80,000 feet below it, the license plate was clearly visible !
The aircraft retired in 1999 & no missile could hit the airplane even a single time in period of 30 years !
